7 Daily Habits That Are Aging Your Skin

What to Avoid Doing to Look Younger

Anti aging skin care secrets are about to know. We have 7 tips to follow anti aging skin care rules. While researchers have yet to find the fountain of youth, there are things you can do now in your everyday life to stay youthful--injections, lifts and tucks aside. Ditch these seven bad habits to maintain your youthful, healthy looks longer.

Smoking

There is not one thing that smoking is good for, especially when it comes to trying to stay youthful and beautiful. (Have you seen those twin study smoker vs. nonsmoker photos? Wow. Nothing gets women to quit smoking like seeing simulated images of how their faces would age if they didn't quit. Every time you smoke one cigarette you’re breathing in toxins and carcinogens that are damaging your organs, including the largest organ in your body: your skin. Not only that, but the repetitive motions you make puckering your lips to smoke forms deep wrinkles around your lips and mouth. Need further evidence to kick your smoking habit for good? If you’re a woman, smoking will cut your life short by 10 years. This was anti aging skin care tips number one!

Not Wearing SPF

In the fight against wrinkles, not only should you of course avoid tanning, but daily moisturizer with SPF is your number one ally. “Sunscreen applied on a daily basis in the form of an SPF-containing moisturizer or as a separate product is the single best way to promote healthy skin and minimize wrinkling,” explains Dermatologic Surgeon Joseph Sobanko. You need to do this not just in the sunny summer months, but all year round. Harmful UV rays are still definitely present in the winter!

While you’re protecting your face and neck, don’t forget your hands. You should apply a hand lotion with SPF every day (year round) to protect against wrinkles and age spots. Just think of how often your paws are exposed to the elements. You don't want crypt keeper hands.

Indulging Your Sweet Tooth

A diet rich in sugar is not only bad for your body, but can also affect your skin. Researchers have found that when you eat sugar, it attaches to proteins that actively work to damage other proteins like collagen and elastin. Once attacked, they become brittle and dry, losing the ability to keep your skin tight and full, which results in saggy, wrinkled skin. If the thought of diabetes isn’t enough to kick your midnight sugar cravings, perhaps this is.

Not Wearing Sunglasses

They’re more than just a must-have fashion accessory. You should be wearing sunglasses every day to protect your eyes and eye area from UV damage caused by sun exposure. While shading your eyes from the sunlight will prevent squinting and thereby help minimize the formation of wrinkles around your eyes, sunglasses are also necessary for the health of your eyesight. Repeated unprotected sun exposure can cause skin cancer around the eyes, cataracts (i.e., the darkening of the lens that you look through, causing cloudy, faded vision as you age), and even macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. And that’s just to name a few. Best bet is to go for a pair with UV protection and wear them all year.

Chewing Gum

Not to burst your bubble, but you may want to ditch that chewing gum habit. Recently, anti aging skin care physicians documented a trend in adults: regularly chewing gum causes wrinkles around the mouth. It makes sense:  if your body is repeatedly performing a motion, it’s likely it will start to show wear and tear. In this case, the repetitive up and down of chewing is causing the skin to lose elasticity, and etch wrinkles into your skin.

Sleeping Positions

Fetal, stomach, side or all sprawled out, everyone has their own comfy sleeping position. While your sleeping position may say something about you psychologically, make sure it’s not saying it on your face.

“Sleeping in certain positions can predispose your to sleep lines that can become permanently etched in your anti aging skin care,” explains Dermatologist Debra Price. “Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on your chin, cheeks and chest, and sleeping on your stomach can increase forehead wrinkles.” It puts a whole new spin on beauty sleep, doesn’t it? Price recommends sleeping on your back to minimize wrinkles. If you just can’t, try silk pillowcases, which she says may be helpful because the skin glides over them more easily, producing less wrinkle-causing friction.

Stress

It’s not just making you miserable now, stress is also prematurely aging you. Stress ages you by weakening your immune system, makes you more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, and decreases your general wellbeing. The best thing you can do is to learn your stressors and how to manage them now. Do things to help prevent stress from getting to you, and free yourself to age gracefully.
Make sure you are follow all seven anti aging skin care rules to live / look younger.
Happy Living!

5 Ways You Never Thought to Use Deodorant

It stops your feet from sweating.
At night, rub some deodorant on your soles. Just like your armpits, it can keep your feet from sweating. Even better, it can make your feet smell better, too.
Actually, you can try this trick pretty much in any area — under your boobs, behind your knees, and even your palms — you want to keep extra dry.
2. It protects your feet against blisters.
There's no denying new shoes take a few wears to really break in. Luckily, a little deodorant can make the easing-in process a lot less painful. Simply swipe the back and sides of your foot before throwing on your just-purchased heels or flats. The deodorant acts as a barrier, protecting your skin from friction.
3. It also curbs chafing.
For those of us who've suffered from annoying thigh burn, this trick is life-changing. Just rub a bit of deodorant on the inside of your legs before you head out on a hot day. This especially works before a run.
4. It relieves itchy insect bites fast.
Most deodorants are made with aluminum, which is great at easing irritating bug bites. The best part? The relief is almost instant.
5. It can remove nail polish in a pinch.
Spray a little deodorant on a cotton ball or pad and just wipe it away. You can also spray it directly onto your nails. But you have to work fast because spray deodorants usually dry quickly.

Why You Still Get So Many Blackheads As An Adult—And What You Can Do About It

If you've ever looked in a magnifying mirror, you've likely obsessed over a blackhead.

A type of acne lesion known as an "open comedone" by dermatologists, blackheads form when hair follicles or pores become clogged due to hormonal changes or certain ingredients in skin or hair products, says New York dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD, medical director of Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice.

While it may be tempting to pick, push, or scrub the icky black bump out, experts say that's a big no-no that can just make the situation worse by damaging skin and making it more likely for you to get even more blackheads in the future. Instead, keep your hands off and follow this guide to safely saying good-bye to blackheads for good.

Choose the Right Face Wash

There are a few options you can try: Look for one containing either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and use it once or twice a day to exfoliate and keep pores from getting plugged. These two ingredients also prevent blackheads from forming—but the trick is to not wait until things come to the surface. You should continue to wash once or twice daily as part of a regular prevention routine. If your blackheads are resistant, a prescription retinoid from the dermatologist's office should do the trick at treating and preventing the bumps, says Goldenberg. And as a bonus, you'll enjoy anti-aging benefits, too.

Play With Peels—If You're Curious

From Biore Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips to super-cheapie 7th Heaven by Montagne-Jeuness masks, lots of fun-to-tinker-with options abound on the market to suck blackheads up. Goldenberg says they work by peeling the superficial layer of skin to open up the comedones. However, just keep in mind that they tend to not be as effective as face washes and retinoids.

Visit a Pro

If you're itching to have blackheads removed immediately, a dermatologist or licensed spa esthetician can do the deed. Either expert may use a professional extractor tool. Just remember: Even though beauty-supply stores may sell these tools, it's dangerous for you to attempt to do it yourself because the possibility of scarring is too great and just not worth the risk.

Meanwhile, certain cosmetic procedures, like chemical peels that utilize exfoliating acids and the popular Clear + Brilliant Laser, can help clear up blackheads while also giving skin an overall rejuvenating treatment that reveals more even tone, says Goldenberg. Choose either if you'd like to try a professional treatment.

Heavy ingredients in skin-care products, as well as gummy filler in hair care that can travel to your skin when you sweat or spray are both notorious causes of blackheads, says Goldenberg. Makeup products like thick concealers and foundations may also be stealth offenders. If you notice a correlation between using certain products and blackheads popping up, stop using them.
The bottom line: Blackheads are stubborn. Successfully treating and preventing them takes consistent daily care with exfoliating ingredients—and which ones you use should depend on the severity of your case.

These Surprising Things Can Make Your Skin Break Out

These Surprising Things Can Make Your Skin Break Out
If you’ve been noticing dry skin or breakouts despite your best efforts to moisturize daily and cleanse effectively, allow us to explain. Even if you follow a fool-proof skin care regimen by the books, there are still so many outside influences that can mess up your complexion. We know how annoying that is, especially since great skin care products are not cheap. But lucky for you, we’ve compiled a list of  what can cause breakouts so your skin can go back to its day job of looking beautiful.

Trying out too many products: As much as the free samples in Sephora seem like a dream come true and you just want to try them all like a kid in a candy store—please refrain. The same goes for trying out a bunch of different moisturizers or serums at home. Piling on products can actually counteract the effects of what you’re trying to improve in your skin and can also irritate you, leading to more breakouts. While we’re on the topic of free samples, be careful about what you use. Lotions and creams that come in a pump are generally safe, but using open blushes and lip colors that other customers have also tested is asking for trouble. These products are a breeding ground for bacteria which will not only break you out, but could also make you sick. Yikes!

Skipping meals: Even if a lunch break seems out of the question during your busy work day, pack a lunch ahead of time and eat at your desk. Missing a meal means missing out on key vitamins and nutrients that your body (and skin) need in order to thrive. By not getting proper nutrition, your skin can lose elasticity and dry out. Not to mention, what you put in your body is key, so if you’re noshing on mostly junky, processed foods, cut down and throw in some fresh, earthy items.

Blasting the AC: Whether it’s a long car ride or just hanging out at home, air conditioning is major factor in skin dryness, which can ultimately lead to breakouts. When the skin is lacking in moisture, it can go into oil production overload, which leads to those pesky blemishes. Cold, artificial air isn’t the least bit friendly to your skin, so if you have to run it, place a humidifier in the room to bring the moisture back in.

Taking super hot showers: Cranking up the temperature in your shower can feel therapeutic, especially on a cold day. In all honesty, it’s just about the last thing your skin needs. Hot water is incredibly drying, and as we’ve mentioned before, dryness can lead to breakouts. A rule of thumb: If your skin is turning red, it’s time to either end your shower or lower the temperature.

Too many trips to the waxer: Especially if you get a face wax, limit the number of times that you go in for a touch-up. Just like razors and bikini lines, over-waxing can cause those annoying little bumps too. The last place you want bumps is on your face, so keep this in mind before scheduling your next appointment.

Talking on your cell phone: Have you ever noticed those finger smears all over your phone’s screen? That’s evidence of dirt and bacteria, so imagine what that’s doing to your face when you press it up against your cheek for long periods of time. Gross, right? Always make sure to use antibacterial wipes on your phone as often you can to avoid breakouts (and to keep good hygiene in general).

Not cleaning your makeup brushes: This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many women skip this incredibly important step. Brushes harbor a ton of bacteria, so essentially every time you apply makeup to your face, you’re also applying bacteria. To prevent this from happening, make sure to wash your brushes at least once a week with mild shampoo and warm water.

Letting hair fall in your faceYour hair’s natural oils (and especially hair that’s pretty greasy) will definitely cause breakouts. Try to keep your hair off your face, and if you have bangs, make sure that they’re clean, even if that means washing just your bangs more often than the rest of your hair.

You’ll Never Shave Or Wax Again After Trying This Natural DIY Sugar Paste

Never Shave Or Wax Again After Trying This Natural DIY Sugar Paste

Lots of women – and some men – shave their legs on a regular basis, but it becomes a tedious task when repeated day in and day out. Even if you only shave a few times a week it still takes up precious time.

Before long all that hair is back – but not anymore thanks to this easy-to-use “sugar paste depilation” hair removal technique!

While their are tons of alternatives to shaving, most contain harmful chemicals that are really bad for your skin. This simple technique only uses three ingredients: sugar, lemon and water.

Start out your sugar paste hair removal journey by combining 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice, 1/4 cup of water and 2 cups of sugar.

Place them in a deep pot and cook on high heat for 4-5 minutes. Once it starts to boil take it off the heat and pour it into a separate bowl. The result will resemble caramelized sugar cake. Allow it to cool for a bit and then start pulling it apart.
The mixture should have a similar texture to chewing gum at this point but if it is too solid add a tiny drop of water. Make sure your skin is completely clean before proceeding to the next part.

Dry the skin then apply the separated parts of the sugar paste. Make sure to apply it in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Then just pull the pieces of paste off your leg and you’re all done!

hair1
This process is a little painful but compared to waxing it is a breeze and the best part is that after a few sessions of this the hair will start to grow back thinner and softer until it pretty much doesn’t come back at all.

Try out this awesome hair-removal tip and let us know how it works out in the comments!

What Does Stress Really Do to Your Skin?

stress-and-skin-story
There’s no question that stress has a serious impact on our complexions. And whether it’s through a massive zit or dullness, skin problems only add to the tension we’re already experiencing, thus creating an awful cycle: we stress out, then break out, then stress out because we’re breaking out. Talk about unfair.
But it might not be as simple as that: it turns out that different types of stressful situations do different things to our skin. Your complexion may be affected differently by short-term stress (like a big meeting) and long-term stress (tension with a spouse)—and the ways to fix both may be different, too. So don’t stress; we have the definitive guide to what stress does to your skin—and exactly what you can do to fix it.

Short Term Stress
A smashed iPhone screen at the worst possible time, that big presentation you have to give…these situations don’t last long, but they definitely work up worry. So how do these relatively short-lived but anxiety-inducing events show up on our faces? “A ticking deadline may cause skin to look dull and tired, and can cause skin conditions to flare up,” says Dr. Marina Peredo, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Think dryness around the mouth and nose, general dullness, those huge pimples that pop up on our chin. Yuck.

The Fix: First, you’re going to want to try to diffuse whatever is causing the tension—we know this isn’t always easy, so here are a few tricks you can turn to. “Taking breaks throughout the day to breathe and try to relax for 10 minutes to reduce stress is helpful,” says Peredo. “Exercise and movement are also good for stress reduction. Take a walk, do yoga, go to the gym. Anything that reduces the stress level to relax you will be beneficial,” she explains.

If you’re dealing with dullness, she recommends a scrub or a moisturizer. We love ultra hydrating products like Lancome’s Hydra Zen Anti-Stress Moisturizing Cream ($56, lancome-usa.com) for those moments. And if blemishes are the issue, she notes you can treat your skin and unclog pores with a salicylic acid cleanser. If you really want to chill out and improve your skin (talk about killing two birds with one stone), try a sheet mask like Dr. Jart’s Micro Jet Clearing Solution ($9, sephora.com), a facial product infused with tea tree oil and salycylic acid to clear your complexion.

Long Term Stress
An ailing parent, stress with a partner, work tension…these enduring stress issues are not any better for your skin. On top of all the regular regular side effects of stress, Peredo says that longer term stress can negative aging ramifications. “Long term stress causes the slowdown of skin’s natural functions including collagen production,” she says. And collagen is what helps our skin looking youthful and plump. “If a person is undergoing long term stress, a visit to the dermatologist is essential,” she told us. “In order to manage the individual’s skin condition, especially in the case of acne or atopic dermatitis, professional care gives the best results as these conditions are very much exacerbated by long term stress.”

Stress Is Truly Individual
But remember, not everyone’s face responds to stress in the same way, as Peredo explains that it’s truly an individual function. It’s even slightly based on a skin condition you already have like breakouts, eczema, and more. “If your skin is drier, it will actually get drier as the body reacts to stress by delivering vital nutrients to vital organs,” she explains of stress and dryness.

And yes, women have it worse then men. Peredo explains that women tend to be more hormonal then men, and since the adrenaline we give off in stressful situations upsets our hormones, we could see more reflected on our faces.

So what to do? While moisturizing and staying on top of your cleansing routine are essential, taking a step back and attempting to relax may be the biggest prevention in any stress-induced skin flare-up.

Five Reasons Why You Need Honey in Your Skin Care Products

Honey, the elixir of the Gods. A pure and natural sweetener produced by Honey Bees for thousands of years, desired and consumed by mankind throughout the span of time.
Sounds a bit like magic? Well, in some ways it is. Just the very act of a colony of bees producing this golden elixir is in many ways, magical.

Did you know that in the span of a Honey Bee’s lifetime, she will only produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey? And that a colony of bees will visit over 2 million trees and flowers and fly over 55,000 miles in order to produce just one pound of honey? Considering the circumference of the earth is about 25,000 miles, it’s no wonder the Honey Bee is considered the most industrious insect on the planet.

We all know the benefits of raw honey when taken internally. Raw honey has been touted to alleviate allergy symptoms, GERD (Gastric Reflux Disease) and used in the treatment of ulcers. When broken down, this complex balance of both fructose and sucrose promotes better athletic performance and a restful night’s sleep.

Bees making Honey

But have you ever considered the effects of honey when applied externally? I think many of us instinctively feel the addition of honey in many of our skin care products on the market today is the safer and more natural alternative. I would love to share with you the reasons why honey and in particular Active Manuka Honey found in the Bee Queen line of skin care lotions is beneficial to your skin.
  • Your skin is the largest organ on the human body. The average adult body carries over eight pounds of skin which converts to about 22 square feet. It stands to reason that we should treat it with the utmost care. It is our first line of defense against harmful pathogens and easily the first damaged from external intrusions. Over exposure to harmful UVA/UVB rays, toxins both internal and external can lead to premature aging and wrinkling. The skin care industry is a 43 billion dollar revenue producer in the United States alone. And yet most of us cannot recognize or pronounce the ingredient list on the back of our skin care products. Doesn’t it stand to reason, that a simple and understandable ingredient deck can be a positive step in the care of this miraculous organ. In the Bee Queen formulations each ingredient is chosen to achieve a specific result to ultimately benefit your skin. For example, the Bee Queen Manuka Honey Lotion has four types of easily recognizable oils.
    • Organic sunflower oil-chosen as a carrier to incorporate honey without grittiness
    • Organic olive oil-adds amino acids and aids in skin repair
    • Organic apricot kernel oil-aids in skin repair
    • Organic meadow foam oil-adds slide. The reason why Bee Queen Manuka Honey Lotion feels so good on your skin.
  • Honey is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants combat and reverse the damage of free-radicals in our systems. A free-radical is a rogue molecule produced when the process of oxidation occurs. Free radicals are cells missing a key ingredient that allows for normal healing and repair. In simpler terms, think of the effect of peeling an apple. Once the protective skin is removed, oxidation causes the apple to become brown, shrivel and eventually rot. Over time our skin is assaulted by a variety of toxic substances. The harmful effects of UVA/UVB rays, environmental toxins such as pollution and cigarette smoke and poor nutrition can trigger the body’s natural production of antioxidants. But over time, these damaged cells overwhelms the body’s natural antioxidants effects resulting in the signs of premature aging, wrinkles and skin discoloration. Doesn’t it make sense to strengthen our skin’s defensive barrier with the application of a powerful, natural antioxidant? Raw honey in our skin care regimen can counteract the effects of these day to day stressors. They can promote the growth of new tissue and eradicate the effect of free radicals.
  • Raw honey is a natural humectant. A humectant is an agent that attracts and retains moisture by locking it inside. In contrast, many skin care products contain glycerin. Glycerin is commonly used as a moisturizing agent. But glycerin, a byproduct of vegetable oil is refined propylene alcohol, a drying agent to your skin. Humectants trap moisture providing a barrier, glycerin absorbs moisture.
  • Raw honey promotes wound healing. The antimicrobial effects of honey are well known. All honey contain properties when broken down form hydrogen peroxide, a powerful antibacterial. In addition, Manuka honey contains an enzyme named Methglyoxal, a germicidal agent 200x’s more powerful than hydrogen peroxide. This enzyme is specific to honey produced by bees who pollinate the Manuka flower found primarily in New Zealand and is closely regulated and rated for its quality control. This is the reason why we have chosen to incorporate Active Manuka honey into the Bee Queen
  • Honey provides UV protection and is an anti-irritant. It is gentle enough to use on sensitive skin and powerful enough to combat the effects of acne and scarring.
As you can see, I am passionate about the benefits of honey and encourage you to incorporate honey into your skin care regimen.  With all the positive benefits, why would you use anything less?

5 Foods That Will Make Your Skin Beautiful

Diet is the most important part of a good skin care routine. As the old saying goes, beauty truly does come from within. No matter how much money or effort you sink into expensive facial products, skin will almost always reflect what’s being put into the body. (A few lucky people can eat anything and never get a pimple, but that’s unusual.)

It’s as much about what you don’t eat as what you do. A diet rich in high-glycemic carbohydrates, such as refined grains and sugar, has been shown to trigger breakouts. By boosting the body’s blood sugar too quickly, the pancreas produces extra insulin to bring those levels down, which also triggers production in the sebaceous glands. These make sebum, a good oil which flushes out dead skin cells and keeps our skin lubricated via pores, but too much of it results in jammed pores, whiteheads, and blackheads. Milk also triggers sebum production, while some vegetable oils (safflower, sesame, corn, sunflower) promote inflammation.

Foods For Skin

The good news is that you can eat and drink your way to beautiful skin. Incorporate the following foods into your diet as much as possible, while minimizing your intake of the foods mentioned above.

1. Carrots

Remember your parents telling you that eating carrots would give you great eyesight? (It didn’t seem to work for me; I just got carrot-coloured hair instead.) It was vitamin A that they were talking about, a powerful antioxidant that comes in the form of beta-carotene in carrots. It helps maintain good vision, teeth, and bones, while ensuring normal skin cell development and firm skin tone.

2. Berries

The goal is to get lots of vitamin C, which is another great antioxidant that will make skin smooth and taut by boosting collagen production. Vitamin C supports the immune system, helps skin to heal properly, and can help you attain that glowing look. Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and black currants are particularly rich in vitamin C, and conveniently lower in sugar than many other fruits.

3. Brazil nuts

Only a small handful of Brazil nuts can provide your daily supply of selenium, yet another antioxidant that works alongside vitamins A and C to boost the immune system. A diet rich in selenium can protect against melanoma, sun damage, and age spots. Other good sources are seeds (sunflower, chia, pumpkin), wheat germ, and meat. Many nuts also contain vitamin E, which helps hold in moisture.

4. Parsley

A humble sprig of parsley is surprisingly high in vitamin K, which helps skin to heal itself and promotes elasticity and good skin tone. Also loaded with vitamins A and C, parsley can cleanse the urinary tract and kidneys, while clearing blemishes and reducing redness. Parsley’s volatile oils have antibacterial and antifungal properties that disinfect pores and prevent acne.

5. Whole grains

Packed with fibre, whole grains are good for reducing the inflammation caused by their overly refined counterparts. They stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce insulin spikes. Whole grains contain zinc, which is repairs skin damage, maintains smoothness and suppleness, and regulates sebum production. The B-vitamin biotin found in whole grains assists skin cells in processing fats, without which skin becomes dry and scaly.
Remember, too, to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Herbal and green teas are also good, but keep away from sugary juices and soda.

9 Natural Remedies for Cellulite

Skin Care

Cellulite seems to be one of those problems that plagues many women these days. Based on the number of times cellulite remedies appear in women’s magazines, websites, and blogs, I’m guessing that this is a problem we still haven’t solved.

Most sources agree that the dimpled appearance of cellulite occurs due to problems/imbalance in the connective tissue and fat in a person’s body, but there are many theories about what may cause this imbalance. It seems that hormones, diet, lifestyle and genetics all play a role but are not absolutes. While those who are overweight tend to have a higher chance of getting cellulite, many thin women complain of it as well.

Below are natural remedies I’ve either tried myself or had trusted sources recommend. They should all help balance the connective tissue/fat in the body and address the many possible causes. Either way, these things are beneficial for other reasons too so they are worth a try!

1. Dry Brushing

This is one remedy that there may not be any scientific evidence that it works but that there is a lot of anecdotal support for. Either way, it feels great and helps stimulate blood and lymph flow in the body.

How often: Dry skin brushing effectively opens up the pores on your skin. This is something you can — and should — be doing daily, even twice a day. Your skin should be dry, so the ideal time is in the shower before you turn on the water. Just a reminder, don’t get the brush wet.

Direction: You should only brush towards the heart. Making long sweeps, avoid back and forth, scrubbing and circular motions. Start at your feet, moving up the legs on both sides, then work from the arms toward your chest. On your stomach, direct the brush counterclockwise. And, don’t brush too hard: Skin should be stimulated and invigorated but not irritated or red.

Type of brush: The bristles should be natural, not synthetic, and preferably vegetable-derived. The bristles themselves should be somewhat stiff, though not too hard. Look for one that has an attachable handle for hard-to-reach spots, if necessary.

Benefits: In addition to sloughing away dry skin on areas like knees, elbows and ankles, body brushing promotes tighter skin, cell renewal and blood flow. This also helps the lymphatic system release toxins and aids in digestion and kidney function. You’ll also notice a glowy, smooth complexion. We love it because it’s one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective things we can do for promoting healthy skin.”
It seems that a natural bristle semi-firm brush with a handle is best and I keep mine in the shower to use daily right before showering.

2. Consuming Gelatin

According to Nourishing Traditions and much of the information I’ve read from the Weston A. Price foundation, there are various health benefits to Gelatin, including:
  • Gelatin supports skin, hair and nail growth
  • It is good  for joints and can help joint recovery
  • Can help tighten loose skin (like the kind you get after having four babies in five years…)
  • Can improve digestion since it naturally binds to water and helps food move more easily though the digestive track
  • Rumored to help improve cellulite
  • Great source of dietary collagen (side note: collagen is too large to be absorbed by the skin, so those skin creams are pretty useless… get it internally and use coconut oil for lotion!)
  • Source of protein (though not a spectacular one) but its specific amino acids can help build muscle.
Gelatin is largely composed of the amino acids glycine and proline, which many people don’t consume in adequate amounts as they are found in the bones, fibrous tissues and organs of animals and as a population, we don’t consume these parts as much anymore. These amino acids are needed not only for proper skin, hair and nail growth, but for optimal immune function and weight regulation!

One theory is that the decline of gelatin containing foods in our diets has led to an increase in cellulite as we don’t have the needed building blocks for healthy connective tissue. Either way, it is another remedy that is good for other reasons and worth a try.

3. Myofascial Massage

One theory is that: “Cellulite forms in the superficial fascia, a layer of connective tissue below the skin that contains fat cells. Superficial fascia is fibrous and due to inactivity, injuries, and improper exercise, adhesions (scar tissue) in the fascia can form contributing to the bunched-up or rippled look of the skin. Not only does the superficial fascia become more fibrous, thickened and coarse, less flexible, but it can also adhere to underlying structures that it normally slides over.”

Some therapists are able to perform a type of massage called myofascial massage or myofascial release, which smoothes this layer of connective tissue and can apparently also help with some types of muscle and joint problems that are related to imbalances in the fascia.
For those of us who don’t have access to regular massage, it seems that using a deep tissue foam roller (like this one) regularly can greatly help as well.

4. Coffee Scrub

Coffee scrubs can be beneficial in reducing cellulite as well. The massage and exfoliation benefits skin by stimulating blood/lymph flow and the caffeine in the coffee has a tightening effect. Pinterest is speckled with accounts of coffee scrubs and wraps working for reducing cellulite and loose skin, and like the other remedies, it is at least worth a try. If nothing else, coffee smells great and this scrub will exfoliate skin:
You will need:
  • 1/4 cup coffee grounds
  • 3 tablespoons sugar or brown sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of melted coconut oil
What to do:
Combine the ingredients to create a paste-like consistency (note that it will harden if cooled if you are using unrefined coconut oil). Store in a glass jar.

To Use:
Massage in to skin for several minutes using firm pressure and wash as usual. Use 2-3 times a week. Results should be visible within a couple of weeks.

5. Kettlebells

Kettlebells are one of my favorite ways to workout and they are especially good for the hips/thighs/buttocks/stomach areas (don’t believe me? do one kettlebell workout and let me know how your thighs feel the next day!)
Increasing blood flow to these areas can help remove cellulite and kettlebells are one of the most effective ways to build muscle and burn fat (both which help minimize the appearance of cellulite)

6. Omega-3s

Another theory is that consumption of the wrong kinds of fats leads to an imbalance of the fatty acids that the body needs for smooth skin and tissue. There is some evidence that consuming enough Omega-3 fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins will help reduce cellulite over time. Either way, Omega-3s and fat soluble vitamins are important for many other functions in the body, so it won’t hurt to try it!
Personally, I take fermented cod liver oil daily for skin health (and for many other reasons).

7. Detox Baths

I love detox baths because they are relaxing, but yet another theory proclaims that toxin build-up in skin and fat tissues lead to cellulite. I couldn’t find any scientific evidence to back the toxin claim, but detox baths can be relaxing and great for the skin in other ways, so they are worth a try!

8. Moisturize Naturally

Just as detox baths may help remove toxins that can lead to skin problems (and maybe cellulite), constantly adding toxins back to the skin in the form of chemical-laden beauty products probably doesn’t help much! If you haven’t already, try using natural options for skin care and moisturizing. Simple coconut oil will work as an all-purpose moisturizer, but if you want to get a little more sophisticated, these are a few of my favorite recipes:

9. Balance Hormones

It seems that many sources agree that hormones play a large part in cellulite formation (one reason that women typically get it and men don’t) and that working toward proper hormone balance can help reduce cellulite. Even if it doesn’t get rid of cellulite, balancing hormones helps in so many other ways that it is worth working on!

  • Lack of proteins and vitamins in diet: Things that goes inside our body matter a lot when it comes to healthy skin affair. Lack of essential proteins and vitamins such vitamin A, E, and C are essential for healthy skin and rebuilding of skin tissues. If an individual’s diet lacks proper amount of nutrients that are necessary for healthy growth of skin then the skin will easily turn dry and dull in short span of time. Hence, including fruits and vegetables that are skin friendly and rich in vitamins and proteins are necessary. Eating fruits and veggies like cucumber, sweet potato, apple and even egg is highly beneficial for skin.
  • Sun exposure: The sharp UV rays of sun have always been the enemy of skin. The ultra-violet rays of the sun have high potential to break down the elastin and collagen in skin which makes the skin go dull and dry very quickly. Sun rays also affect the melanocytes in skin, which could disturb the pigmentation cycle of skin. Exposure to sun heat for long duration could give various skin problems such as rashes, red patches, skin dryness, and even skin cancer. Hence, it is always advised not to go out in sun unprotected and cover the skin with cloth while moving out in sun.
  • Smoking: If one closely observes the skin of a smoker, they would find more wrinkles and looseness in skin. The skin of a smoker is not healthy and doesn’t repair as easily as the skin of a non-smoker. The reason behind this problem is the contraction of blood vessels due to smoking. Smoking stops the proper supply of blood to the outer layer of skin that results in dull and lifeless appearance of skin. Beyond this, the body and skin of a smoker also gets easily dehydrated and lacks moisture to a great level. In short, smoking harms the health as well as skin of an individual adversely.

  • Hot Showers: The hot showers might give a relaxing and refreshing effect to many people but the same hot shower snatches away the moisture of skin. Hot water strips down the outer most layer of skin called epidermis and makes the skin dry and scaly. Hence, it is always advised to avoid hot water usage for cleaning skin. So, try and take hot showers moderately rather than using hot water for daily bath.
Beyond the above major reasons, there are small daily practices that damage the skin day-by-day, bit-by-bit. Here is the list of faulty practices in daily lifestyle that are causing damage to skin:
  1. Skipping meals is an unhealthy practice and makes the skin as well as body to starve for essential proteins and vitamins. This practice causes dryness and premature aging of skin.
  2. Testing too many skin products, cosmetics, lotions and other items harms the skin different days with their different properties. Hence, choose the product wisely and stick to a particular skin product.
  3. Not drinking enough water throughout the day makes the body and skin dehydrated and the skin becomes shrunk and rough very easily.
  4. Insufficient sleep or sleeping at odd timings in busy lifestyle harms the skin to great extent. Lack of sleep also leads to the problem of dark circles and clogged pores.
  5. Exfoliating skin too often leads to stripping down of essential oil in skin making it rough and dry. Try to keep the exfoliating practice to maximum number of once in a week to keep skin healthy.
