While it is good to be coordinated, there is a fine line between the combination of colors and go for a look over the top. To avoid these errors coordinating color, which is a good idea to know what colors work for your skin tone, style and the season for that dress.

The One Product You Need For Stay-Put Lipstick

When you hear the words "lip liner" it's easy to think of the high-contrasting colors of the '80s and '90s. But lip liner is far from an outdated beauty product. In fact, a few swipes of this handy little tool can help your lipstick last from morning until well into the night and it even prevents color from bleeding. Five tips for getting the most out of this cosmetics bag staple below:
  1. The liner trifecta. There are three lip liner shades you should always have in your arsenal: a red, like MAC Cremestick Liner in Red Enriched ($15); a deep plum, like Bobbi Brown Lip Liner in Rum Raisin ($20); and a baby pink, like L'Oréal Colour Riche Lip Liner in Eternal Mauve ($4.17).
  2. Outline the lips. Start by lining the natural line of your lips with your pencil. If you need to add definition or depth to your top or bottom lip, use a light touch to keep it looking natural.
  3. Fill in the top. After the initial line, take your pencil and start sketching in the area of lip under your cupid's bow until it reaches about the middle of your upper lip.
  4. Fill in the bottom. Next, start filling in the fullest part of your bottom lip with the liner until you reach halfway up your lip, using your finger or a lip brush to diffuse any harshness.
  5. Finish with your lipstick. And for touch-ups, try using your lip liner instead of your lipstick. This will ensure your lips keep their color for hours on end.

8 Reasons Korean Products Are Taking the West by Storm

Korean women are known for their flawless complexions. Isn’t it time you learned a few Korean beauty secrets and joined the Asian beauty revolution?

In the age of globalization, we consumers have more choices than ever. We drive foreign cars, import exclusive foreign fashion labels and rarely have to travel more than a few blocks to dine on some sumptuous sushi or a traditional Indian curry.

Our love for the exotic doesn’t stop there; the past few years have seen our cosmetics industry completely transformed by Eastern influences. BB Cream, CC Cream, even snail cream…where do you think these popular products came from?

Surprise – South Korea! Admit it: You didn’t see that coming.
Seoul, Korea’s thriving beauty metropolis, is well ahead of the curve when it comes to creating the biggest and best beauty trends of the decade.

So, if you haven’t already diversified your makeup stash with Korean cosmetics, I’m here to give you eight awesome reasons why you should: a guided tour of Korean beauty secrets.

#1 Korean Beauty Products Are More Affordable

As an Australian beauty blogger, I’m always ranting about the exorbitant prices we pay for cosmetics. $25 for a Maybelline mascara? $33 for a MAC lipstick? How about no?!

One of the first things that drew me into the world of Korean cosmetics was the pricing. Even if you’re based in the United States or the U.K., beauty doesn’t always come cheap. If you’re a budget beauty junkie like me, you’re always looking for ways to save a few cents.

While high-end Korean beauty products can still set you back hundreds of dollars, the drugstore/low-end brands consistently offer amazing value.

For example, most reputable low-end Aussie beauty balm creams and foundations retail for at least $20. My Holy Grail Korean BB cream? $13, including international shipping.
The same applies to mascara. None of my $20 Maybelline, Rimmel or MaxFactor mascaras can compete with my insanely volumizing Korean Etude House 3 Step Volumecara. A fellow beauty junkie echoed my sentiment, explaining, “I’d much rather spend $9 to $12 on [the Korean mascara] than the $30-plus I was paying for Lancome before!”

Bottom line? Korean cosmetics offer quality for a fraction of the price of their Western competitors. Interested? Here are just a few popular low-end Korean cosmetics brands to check out for yourself: Etude House, Missha M, Skin Food, The Face Shop, Innisfree, Tony Moly and VOV.

#2 The West Just Can’t Get BB Creams Right

If you’ve never tried a Korean BB cream, you might be staring at this article in outrage as you lovingly clutch your favorite Western BB in hand. I’m not here to diss American BB creams, but the fact is, they’re a poor imitation of their Asian counterparts.

What’s the difference? While Western BB creams act more like lightweight, tinted moisturizers, Korean BB creams tend to be thicker in consistency. They generally offer better coverage and boast a whole host of skin improving qualities, such as whitening, wrinkle control and sun protection. I know which I prefer!
Want to try the real deal? My personal favorite is Missha M’s Perfect Cover BB Cream. However, Etude House’s Precious Mineral BB Cream is also hugely popular (and affordable) with both Koreans and Korean beauty connoisseurs around the globe.

#3 Korean Beauty Products Make Makeup Fun

If YouTube has taught us anything, it’s that applying makeup should be fun. Experimenting with new colours and combinations to create looks that pop is practically an art form. But when your main experience with your makeup is throwing on some neutral shades as you rush out the door to work, your beauty routine can quickly start to feel like just another chore.

Here’s where Korean cosmetics can help. You’re probably familiar with Japan’s overriding Kawaii or “cute” culture. South Korean follows similar trends, meaning that many low-end Korean makeup brands sport eye-catching and whimsical product designs that’ll make you smile every time you look at your vanity. It’s hard to be morose when you’re applying concealer from a container in the shape of a panda!

Korean cosmetics brand Etude House is known for its gorgeously girly packaging. Beauty bloggers (myself included!) can’t get enough of the recent royalty-inspired Princess Etoinette collection. Who doesn’t want to feel like a princess from time to time?

#4 Korean Skin Care Routines Get Results

Korean women are known around the globe for flawless complexions that defy aging. It’s no coincidence that while we Westerners spend our early teens sleeping in mascara and forgetting to moisturize, Korean girls are already taking meticulous care of their skin.
It’s not just starting early that gets results – it’s also the time that goes into completing a nightly Korean skin care routine. It’s not uncommon for women to use up to ten different products, each aimed at tackling a different skin care concern.
Here are the most common nightly steps for achieving complexion perfect:
  1. Double cleanse
  2. Exfoliate
  3. Apply toner
  4. Apply essence
  5. Use an ampoule
  6. Apply a face mask
  7. Massage in eye cream
  8. Add an emulsifier
  9. Apply a rich night cream
The whole saga can take up to 40 minutes! Want to know more about each step of the process? Korean beauty enthusiast Kerry has the low down on her seriously informative blog, Skin&Tonics.

#5 Korean Beauty Products Are Ahead of the Curve

Korean Beauty Products Are Ahead of the Curve
Source: via pinterest.com

Let’s face it – there’s something satisfying about being a trendsetter. If you love introducing your friends and family to the coolest new products and fads, it’s definitely time to dip your feet into the pool of Korean cosmetics.

Which trendy new skincare and beauty products can we thank Korea for?
  • BB cream – Although it originated in Germany as an all-in-one product for patients to use post-surgery or facial peels, South Korea is responsible for making it the go-to face product for celebs and beauty junkies alike. This innovative product generally provides everything from a lightweight, medium coverage alternative to foundation to SPF properties. BB cream also purports to whiten the skin and treat the signs of aging.
  • Snail cream – The idea of slathering snail secretions all over your face might not sound appealing, but England’s The Guardian reports that sales of this unusual beauty product have more than tripled in the last year. Although the healing and anti-inflammatory properties of snail filtrate were originally discovered by Chilean farmers, Korean cosmetics companies were one of the first to incorporate this amazing antibacterial ingredient in their skin creams. Now snail cream can just as easily be found in British and American high streets, with celebrities like Katie Holmes raving about its skin restorative powers.
  • Sleeping packs – Now that you know just how committed they are to their nightly skincare routines, you won’t be surprised to learn that moisturizer isn’t the only facial cream many Korean women apply before bed. Here’s where sleeping packs come in. Sleeping packs are heavy duty night creams that aim to infuse the skin with stacks of nutrients between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. when the skin is most focused on healing and rejuvenation.
If you want to anticipate next season’s beauty fads, keep an eye on Seoul.

#6 Korean Cosmetics Aren’t Afraid to Be Downright Weird

We’ve already discussed the slightly squeamish topic of snail creams, but that’s just the beginning. When it comes to producing strange and innovative new skin care solutions, Korea isn’t afraid to think outside of the box. Korean products include ingredients that will definitely make the uninitiated wince!
Here are just a couple of wacky (but increasingly scientifically proven) ingredients being embraced in South Korean cosmetics right now:
  • Snake Venom – It sounds a little scary, but hear me out! Recent studies have shown that viper venom can have a multitude of restorative effects on the skin. These effects have now been isolated and harnessed in a synthetic tripeptide which harmlessly mimics the functions of snake venom when applied to human skin. Products containing the synthetic tripeptide temporarily inhibit movement of the facial muscles to treat wrinkles in much the same way Botox does. Syn-ake creams can now be found on pharmacy and supermarket shelves all over the world.
  • Bee Venom – Bee venom is another favourite Korean skincare ingredient that’s starting to make a buzz on the world stage. Why? Applying products that contain bee venom to the skin can trick your face into believing it has been stung with a toxin called melittin. This toxin causes the body to direct blood flow to the area, which in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin, of course, are responsible for keeping the skin looking taut and youthful.
  • Sheep Placenta – Thanks to stars like Simon Cowell and Victoria Beckham, the idea of paying several hundred dollars for a sheep placenta facial is no longer wildly out of the realm of possibility. LA Dermatologists frequently apply lotions infused with sheep placenta to patients’ skin along with exfoliating microdermabrasion techniques and red light therapy (to promote collagen production) as part of an expensive facial procedure that promises to roll back the years. Why sheep placenta? Sheep placenta contains stem-cells, which are renowned for their ability to rejuvenate the skin. Even applied topically, it’s known to kickstart the production of collagen, proteins and elastin for younger looking skin.
In Korea, you don’t need an expensive facial to harness the benefits of placenta, with many popular cosmetics brands, such as Mizon, offering inexpensive placenta based night creams as an easy alternative.

#7 Korean Cosmetics Companies Understand the Importance of Sunscreen

Korean Cosmetics Companies Understand the Importance of Sunscreen
Source: via pinterest.com

One product that most Korean women swear by is sunscreen. While there is a growing emphasis on being sun-smart in the West, East Asian products are way ahead of the competition. Korean culture recognizes that keeping out of the sun isn’t only important to avoid developing melanomas, but it’s also the key to maintaining youthful skin.

If you’re as forgetful as I am when it comes to applying sunscreen, having a two-in-one product is a lifesaver. Fortunately, most South Korean beauty products, including foundations and BB creams, contain a high SPF content. Not only that, but many are also formulated with ingredients to even skintone and lighten any dark spots you’ve already got courtesy of too much sun exposure.

#8 Korean Beauty Products Come With an Amazing Community

Last but not least, I’ve got to acknowledge the tight-knit but welcoming online Asian makeup community. When buying makeup, few of us take into consideration what kind of an online following the products have. When I first delved into the world of Korean beauty I was instantly struck by the fabulously enthusiastic community standing behind Korean cosmetics.

You need only Google your new products to find whole forums of ladies (and possibly some gents), such as the Asian Beauty Reddit, discussing their fave foreign beauty finds. Got questions about your skincare routine? Need someone to read the Korean instructions on your new face mask? Everyone is eager to lend a hand. Joining the Korean beauty revolution online is a great way to make new friends worldwide and pick up fascinating make up tips from around the globe.

Whether you fancy yourself a trend-setter, you can’t get enough of cute makeup, or you simply want a fool-proof and thorough new beauty routine for less, there are tons of great reasons to start exploring the world of Korean cosmetics. What are you waiting for? Start Googling and spice up your makeup collection today!

Have you ever bought beauty products from overseas? What are your favorite foreign brands?

Nude Lipstick is the Answer to Everything

Lipstick

I’ve decided. Nude lipstick is the answer to everything. Well, at least in terms of beauty. Okay, sometimes bronzer may also be involved. BUT. If you’re not feeling festive enough or pretty enough or your favorite dress suddenly doesn’t look quite right but everyone is waiting for you in the car (ummmmm), the answer, sweet peas, is nude lipstick. It’s modern. It’s chic. It makes every outfit look better. People will probably ask you what lipstick you’re wearing so be sure to find a nude that brightens up your face, not makes it look like death warmed over. Oh, you’ll know. But it may require a bit of experimentation first. To get you started, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorites over at eBay, where I once bought a limited-edition MAC pinky-nude lipstick from Canada for $50 because it was sold out everywhere. Like I said, nude lipstick.

P.S. Check out my other buying guides for ebay, where I like to shop and often write about it.

Italian Beauty Discoveries

Bongiorno! I’ve been on an Italian beauty kick since my trip to the spa there last month. France gets all the love in this department but there’s something about the Old Country that speaks to me. Here beauty is the ultimate therapy, a daily ritual not an occasional luxury. No Italian brand does it better than Perlier, who for over 80 years has been creating products derived from the active ingredients of medicinal plants. It’s a timeless approach, looking to nature for what our skin and body needs, but one that many modern beauty companies have tried to replicate with synthetic ingredients. That might be cheaper, but fast beauty doesn’t do nearly as much for your skin or your soul.

Perlier_SheaButter

In my quest for a good shea cream, I discovered Perlier’s. The benefits of shea butter are astounding for anyone with dry, irritated or aging skin (so, pretty much everyone). I’ve seen shea soothe wind burn and chapped skin, calm redness almost instantly, and restore moisture to dry, flakey skin that hadn’t responded to anything else. Rich in Vitamin A, it’s a natural form of retinol that smoothes fine lines and refines skin tone without any irritation. A game changer. Unfortunately, most so-called shea creams on the market only contain five percent actual shea. They might feel nice but they aren’t concentrated enough to offer much else (seriously, this drives me nuts!). Perlier Shea Butter, however, contains a whopping 99-percent pure shea and is free of parabens. I could practically eat the almond-scented version with a spoon.

Perlier_Honey_web

Perlier is also known for incorporating honey in its treatments. A natural humectant, honey is wildly hydrating and dewifying. It also smells out of this world. The Imperial Honey Nourishing Body Butter is so silky and nourishing, not greasy at all. Plus, you know I can’t resist that gold packaging! So regal. I also can’t stop reaching for the Honey Lip & Contour Ant-Wrinkle Plumping Serum. The delicate cream is like a mini-facial for lips that leaves them supersoft and rosy without any weird tingling. It’s also an awesome lipstick primer.

Best Makeup Brushes Ever? Meet Sigma Beauty

Although my plans for Indie Beauty Week were foiled last week by a power outage, I’d be remiss to deprive you of this discovery! Minneapolis-based Sigma Beauty has taken the industry by storm with it’s almost-too-good-to-be-true makeup brushes. They perform like many pricier alternatives yet cost way less. The collection is a bit overwhelming if you’re not a professional artist, which is why Sigma’s quick tutorials are so fab. Like How to Contour, which makes me want to collect contouring brushes!

Best Makeup Brushes

Then there are the foundation brushes, my favorite. Once you apply foundation with the right brush, you’ll never go back.

Best Makeup Brushes

And the blush brushes, oh my! I’ve always wanted one made specifically for STIPPLING cream blush, haven’t you?

Best Makeup Brushes

If it’s time to invest in a full set, consider the Essential Kits. Starting at just $98 for 12 full-size brushes, these are all most of us will ever need—and then some. There are also plenty of fine vegan options for those of you who prefer synthetic versus animal hair. I definitely do when it comes to applying creams, liquid and concealer, because they don’t soak up the product.

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes the Natural Way

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

I don’t remember the last time I actually washed my makeup brushes. I know, I know! It’s totally gross, but washing brushes always get trumped by more important things, like catching up on Orange Is the new Black or painting my nails. But after battling some not-so-pretty adult acne and noticing that my brushes were turning pretty icky, I figured it was time to give them a much deserved day at the spa! Turns out, washing makeup brushes the all-natural way is easy peasy, and you already have everything you’ll need in your kitchen cabinets.
Here’s a quick and easy recipe I recently perfected to keep brushes squeaky clean.

What you’ll need:
1 part all natural dish-washing liquid (I used Mrs. Meyers in Basil)
1 part organic olive oil
Note: if you have oily skin, I’d recommend 2 dish-washing liquid + 1 part organic olive oil

Directions:
1. Mix together your soap & olive oil on a plate or ramekin.

2. Apply the mixture evenly to your brush, spinning each side around the plate. You’ll begin to see makeup and other debris start to fall away from your brush (prepare get a little grossed out…)

3. Work through the brush with your fingers to ensure all bristles are all getting equal love. Rinse off the soapy solution under cold water with the brush pointed down, gently squeezing out excess water.

4. Lay brushes flat or at an angle to air-dry so moisture doesn’t break down the base of the brush.

That’s it! Any other DIY makeup brush cleaning recipes you’d like to share? We’re all ears!

Finding the right beauty products for your skin isn’t always an easy task. With tons of products with extremely hefty price tags, you definitely want to get the most of your money! We are thrilled to have Kelsey of A Balancing Peach back with us today to let us in on her skin secretes. She is sharing her effective beauty products that she uses and trusts. After trying out countless serums and cremes, we are so excited that Kelsey has created this roundup to take out the hassle of finding the perfect beauty products! These favorites are definitely making us do a little online shopping today! Check out Kelsey’s top picks below:
pretty-beauty-products
I have collected quite the arsenal of skincare products anymore. I think it’s due to suffering from years of bad skin problems + the love for any “perfect skin” gimmick. Sadly, every beauty junkie out there knows the number of products that actually create perfect skin versus those that claim fame for doing so are slim to none. So if I had to pick the products that can actually back up their flashy advertising, these bad boys would be the ones:
Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant ($80)
The closest thing I have actually found to an actual at home microderm. Unlike other exfoliators, this product uses both physical and chemical exfoliants to help smooth out the surface of your skin. Tiny pharmaceutical grade crystals in the product helps skin tone and texture, and added lactic acid gently banishes dead skin cells. It definitely comes with a hefty price tag, but know that one in house microderm will cost you at least $80 and this Skin Exfoliant gets you a year’s worth of two microderms a week.
Doctor D. Schwab’s Flawless Skin Fluid ($39)
I’ve just discovered this product, but I have absolutely fallen in love with what it does for my skin. It seems to instantly correct any uneven skin tone and gives my skin a radiant, youthful glow. The fluid does seem a tad light for drier weather, but paired with a serum it works wonders.
effective-skin-products
Tatcha Rice Powder ($65)
By far this fun powder to liquid cleanser is my most favorite item in my skincare lineup. If the Dr.  Brandt Skin Exfoliant sounds a tad harsh for your sensitive skin, you will absolutely fall in love with this product. It’s a cleanser, toner and exfoliant all in one that gives you the freshest gentle clean feeling. It’s formulated with Japanese rise bran and crushed pearl, both ingredients known for their anti aging and calming exfoliant properties. The rice powder is such a fun water activated product that your skin will be begging for you to use. (You can also snag this in my favorite $15 travel size.)
Ole Henricksen Truth Serum ($72)
I was one of those beauty obsessed junkies that absolutely refused to buy into the whole serum trend. It’s not so much that I thought they are useless, but frankly they are often too ineffective considering how pricey they can get. Luckily, this lightweight, oil-free serum from the Ole Henricksen line is easily worth it’s price tag. With only two months use, I’ve noticed that my skin is visibly brighter and healthier. It’s chocked full of Vitamin C to promote anti-aging by supporting natural collagen and with green tea extract to aid in nourishing your skin. I honestly can’t say enough good things about it, and I’ll be buying this one over and over again.
Derma E Hydrating Night Creme ($30)
I was tired of putting out so much money into thick, goopy night creams for my skin. I took a risk on this affordable night cream and fell in love with what it does for my skin. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid meaning it seems much more gel like than creamy with it’s lightweight texture. It’s the one product that literally plumps my skin with one night’s use and it’s the one product that can soothe and treat stressed, dried out skin in a matter of minutes.

4 Best Black Mascaras for Killer Eyes

Let’s just be honest, when it comes to finding the best black mascaras out there, a girl’s got her work cut out for her! I’ve tried so many mascaras that were ranted and raved about by many professionals, women I know, and even celebrities. Yet, it was increasingly hard to find one that worked for me. Many clumped, caked, flaked, or made my eyes irritated, watery, and didn’t hold up well if I shed a tear or two in a movie, or if I ran into an afternoon rain shower. Mascara is one of those things that, as women, we feel like we need to wear, yet it’s one of the hardest quality products to find. Well, I’ve got some help for you since I’ve rounded up the 11 best black mascaras out there. I hope you like these as much as I do. While some have more benefits than others, I think you’ll see each one has its own tremendous qualities. For any budget or beauty regimen, these black mascaras will have you looking lovely in no time!

1. Lancôme Définicils High Definition Mascara

Lancôme Définicils High Definition Mascara
I’ve recently become obsessed with the Lancome line of products, and they have one of the best black mascaras of any brand I’ve found yet. This mascara is formulated to give you the long, defined lashes you've always desired and though it is a little pricey, it’s won multiple awards, making it worth every penny! I love how the brushes are evenly-spaced out so they prevent clumping, and the brush even has specially grooved bristles that make putting it on easier too.

Price: $14.00 at amazon.com

2. BareMinerals Flawless Definition Mascara

BareMinerals Flawless Definition Mascara
I’ve been a huge fan of the #bareMinerals brand for years, and they rarely make a bad product, including this great mascara. It really lengthens lashes well, and includes a 360 degree comb-like wand to give you complete coverage. It is also fabulous for never flaking, smudging, or peeling off easily. It also contains no parabens or sulfates.
Price: $13.98 at Amazon.com

3. L’Oreal Voluminous Volume Building Mascara

L’Oreal Voluminous Volume Building Mascara
I was first introduced to this mascara when I was sixteen and have been buying it ever since. It truly does make your lashes stunning, all for less than $10. This award-winning mascara makes your lashes up to four times their size in volume, and contains special conditioners that help to make them silky and smooth. It doesn’t flake off and it comes in waterproof formulas. It is also smudge-proof and looks incredibly exotic for less money than most other brands with the same results.

Why use a CLEAR LIP LINER?

DO YOU OWN A CLEAR LIP LINER OR WONDER WHAT IT IS?

A Creative Beauty tip…I recently received a sample of the Mary Kay clear lip liner.  Of course, I had no clue how to use it, why to use it or need it!  I did alittle research and now I know why I SHOULD use it!  But when will I have the time to use it?  That’s still an unsolved question!
So, this is what I have learned to date.

Clear lip liner is applied around the lips to prevent lipstick from smudging or feathering outside the lips. Usually, lip liner is colored which is what I have used in the past. I also used a slightly darker shade of lip liner than my lipstick to create a more dramatic look.  On the other hand, a clear lip liner, allows a more natural look while keeping the lipstick where it should go.

Clear lip liner has a matte finish. Why would you want to make the edges of your lips shiny?  Those of us who have little lines around our mouth, watch out!  On occasion my  lipstick would move into those lines and not look very pretty!  A clear lip liner will prevent this.

Application Tip – Apply clear lip liner before lipstick.  My clear lip liner came in a pencil like eye liners do.  If your lip liner does not come this way, use a small angled brush to trace the edges of your lips.  Do not go outside of the borders of your lips or it will look unnatural!   Let the lip liner dry before applying your lipstick!  You should have a very pretty end result!

The Mary Kay Clear Lip Liner pencil has a built in sharpener in the cap!  So, cool!  No extra sharpeners needed!  If you want a clear lip liner, then click the SHOP icon above and shop with me!  Or go to MARY KAY CLEAR LIP LINER
