Can What I Eat Cause Acne Breakouts?

Plain and simple, acne can be a pain to deal with and sometimes even embarrassing. So this begs the question: how do you prevent acne breakouts in the first place? What causes these breakouts?
While some trace breakouts back to poor hygiene, or too much hygiene, others believe there is a link between the foods we eat and our tendency to breakout. Although it has been difficult to prove, some experts claim that there is indeed a correlation between what we eat and how it affects our skin.
Here are some of the foods that are more likely to cause acne breakouts.

Refined and Processed Carbohydrates

Foods such as white bread and pasta have a high glycemic index, meaning that they foods can quickly be broken down into sugar, which is not good for the skin. Fast food - pizza, burgers, french fries, etc. - also fall into this group for all the processed carbs they contain. The alternative to these foods? Products that are made with whole grains. To ensure you’re getting what you need, look for products that list whole grain as their first ingredient and that do not list any types of corn syrups.

Dairy

After many studies, researchers have found a connections between milk, cream cheese, cottage cheese, and other milk products and acne breakouts. Since milk is usually produced by pregnant cows, there are many hormones that are passed down into the milk we drink, thus aggravating acne or triggering acne breakouts. But don’t worry, in this day and age, there are plenty of non-dairy alternatives such as soy milk, coconut yogurt, and almond cheese.

Chocolate

Although researchers are not sure why, there is a correlation between cacao chocolate and acne. However, chocolate only seems to make existing acne worse, instead of being the cause of new acne breakouts. Before you concern yourself with how on earth you’re going to resist your chocolate cravings, think about switching from milk chocolate to dark chocolate, as studies did not show any connection between dark chocolate and acne breakouts.
Essentially, yes, the foods you eat can cause acne or make existing breakouts worse. In a perfect world, you can eliminate all these foods and not worry about if what you are eating is going to result in a breakout. However, it is difficult to cut out certain food groups entirely. Focus on moderation when it comes to your diet and look for skincare products that can also help to eliminate the problem.

Can stress cause acne?

There are many causes for acne, and yes, stress can be one of them. Scientific research has shown links between stress and acne breakouts. The science behind it claims that “when [the] body is stressed, there is a hormone fluctuation that causes an increase in the amount of oil your skin secretes,” which is what leads to acne formation or worsening of a present acne breakout.
Furthermore, stress can cause one to eat foods that result in one being prone to acne breakouts. Regardless, stress is a cause of acne, but is unusual in that these acne breakouts cannot be pinpointed to their root causes.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine which acne breakouts are a result of stress as stress-induced acne looks the same as any other form of acne. Therefore, there are no direct treatments for stress-induced acne.
So then clearly you have to treat your stress, right? There has to be some form of medication that can control your stress and therefore prevent your acne from worsening, or even occurring in the first place.
That’s not exactly how it works.
While alleviating your stress will help in the long-run, you cannot always control when your body will stress and how it will react to such stress. However, there are skincare solutions out there to treat and prevent acne breakouts. Such acne appearance require immediate care, therefore it is important to find solutions that work for you.
Dealing with stress-induced acne can be difficult, and may even add to your stress. Therefore, you should keep in mind what kinds of activities bring stress into your life in the first place and figure out how you can manage the stress when it hits you. Secondly, having a good set of skincare products to help battle acne breakouts will help in preventing blemishes in the first place.

Does Tea Tree Oil Help for Acne?

When it comes to acne care, it is easy to get lost in the variety of options that are out there for treating acne. They are either chemically derived or naturally derived, and it is difficult to choose between the two because the chemical products tend to appear more effective, though not as safe as, the natural alternatives. So how does one decide?
This is where tea tree oil comes into the picture. Many studies have been done on tea tree oil and the effects they have on treating acne.
Research has shown that tea tree oil is just as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide. Although, the benzoyl peroxide works faster, the tea tree oil results in fewer side effects. Tea tree oil has been shown to be a safe natural alternative as it contains antimicrobial qualities that allow it to kill the P. acnes bacteria that cause breakouts in the first place.

So How Do You Use Tea Tree Oil?

There are many ways in which tea tree oil can be used. Here we found 8 ways that you can use tea tree oil in your skincare routine.
1. Removing makeup (normal to dry skin)
Mix 1/4 cup canola oil with 10 drops tea tree oil in a 4-ounce sterilized glass jar with tight-fitting lid
Shake until blended.
Soak a cotton ball with the mixture and remove makeup as you normally would. Rinse your face with warm water and follow with a toner.
Store the remainder in a dark, cool place.
2. Treating acne
Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with 20-40 drops of witch hazel
Apply to skin 1-2 times a day with cotton swab.
Watch for overusage as it can dry out your skin and stay out of the sun since it can make it more sensitive to UV rays
3. Facial Mask
Add 4 drops of tea tree oil to one egg white
Whisk well, then apply mask to clean face
Leave on face for 15 minutes
Rinse with lukewarm water
Do not use more than once a week
4. Make a tea tree oil rinse
Add 4 drops of tea tree oil to a cup of water
Rinse face with this mix
To be used only once a day
5. Apply tea tree oil directly to face
Make sure skin is clean and dry
Simply soak a cotton swab with the tea tree oil and apply it directly to the breakout
Do not rinse
Can be done twice a day (morning and evening)
6. Homemade spot treatment
Mix a few drops of tea tree oil into a few teaspoons of aloe vera gel or raw, organic honey
Apply directly onto the acne breakout
7. Homemade face scrub
Mix ½ cup sugar, ¼ cup sesame or olive oil, 1 tablespoon honey, and 10 drops tea tree oil
Massage onto damp face in a circular motion for 2-5 minutes
Rinse with warm water
Pat dry your face
8. Add to cleanser and moisturizer
Simply add 2-6 drops to your regular cleanser and moisturizer
Be careful not to get into eyes
Our skin is so delicate and we want to do everything we can to keep it looking at its best. Tea tree oil is safe and effective for achieving that ideal skin, all while being so simple to use.

Should I stop wearing makeup if I have acne?

The debate over wearing makeup while having acne is nothing new. In fact, many of us have hit those crossroads before and still face it. You have acne but you don't want people to see that you have acne, so you cover it up with makeup. But, wearing makeup may just exacerbate the problem so that you end up with more acne and you need more makeup to cover up. The more the acne continues to worsen, the less likely you are to want to take a break from the makeup. And so the cycle continues.
So what do you do? What is the real answer here when it comes to wearing makeup with acne?
To start off, it is important to recognize how acne is caused in the first place. Simply put, when the body is undergoing a fluctuation of hormones, these hormones cause the oil glands to produce more sebum (oily matter released from sebaceous glands), which then block the skin's pores. Bacteria can grow in these pores, resulting in inflammation and breakouts.
There are various factors behind the initial causes of these hormone fluctuations, such as diet and stress.
Makeup, although it may not be a cause, can worsen existing acne and lead to more acne breakouts as certain makeup products contain oil can clog the pores, thus promoting that bacterial growth.
However, in some cases, makeup may actually be beneficial for your skin, especially if they are water-based and contain ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (these are known to kill and prevent bacteria growth). Though, be careful with such products as they can dry out the skin, causing the skin to send the oil glands into overdrive and promote acne breakouts. It is important to always remove all makeup so as to allow the pores to breathe.
Other, natural forms of acne treatment and prevention would be tea tree oil. It is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide, without the added side effects.
So should you stop wearing makeup if you have acne? While it would be ideal to help the skin breathe, you do not necessarily need to stop wearing makeup if you use the right makeup products and remember to take all other steps to helping your skin stay healthy.

Natural Acne Treatment With Homemade Facial Masks

Severe-Acne-Natural-Cures
Acne products don’t have to hurt your pockets or break your budget. There are actually acne remedies that are cheap and so familiar you’re likely to find them in your pantry or fridge . While they may seem unlikely products for acne relief, these items are packed with skin-friendly compounds that help banish unsightly pimples and blemishes. Here are four of the simplest yet most effective home remedies against acne:

Home Remedy # 1: Honey

Honey is a powerful natural antiseptic. Its acidity, viscosity, and the presence of the compounds methylglyoxal and glucose oxidase (an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide) makes honey kill acne-causing bacteria.. It can even kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Home Remedy #2: Pumpkin

Pumpkin is an excellent source of the skin vitamins A, C, and E. Vitamin A is a powerful anti-acne vitamin. You can blend pumpkin to a paste and use it as a facial mask or just add more of the vegetable to your diet for clearer, healthier skin.

Home Remedy #3: Oats

Oats are another great home remedy against acne . It contains compounds called saponins that help remove stubborn dirt as well as absorb excess oil from your skin. It is also rich in antioxidants that help protect and repair the skin. It even hasanti-inflammatory properties that help diminish the redness and swelling in acne as well as counter irritation. You can mix oats with your honey or pumpkin mask for added exfoliation or just mix oats with water until it forms a paste and slather on the face .

Home Remedy #4: Yogurt

Yogurt is not just a healthy snack – it is very good for the skin too . It contains an alpha hydroxyl acid (also known as AHA – you may have read this on the labels of some acne products) that not only helps exfoliate and promote healthy skin growth but also helps kill acne-causing bacteria . Yogurt also has zinc and vitamin B, nutrients that are essential for maintaining healthy, clear skin. These also help tighten pores and improve the overall texture of the skin. To make the most of the acne-fighting properties of yogurt, you can use the plain variety as a facial mask and eat the flavored ones during snack time.

Natural Acne Cures That Work

Are you looking for natural acne cures that really work?

natural-acne-cures
Here is a list that will take a lot of the guesswork out of acne remedies:

First, make sure you drink plenty of water. By drinking plenty of water, you are flushing impurities out of your body that can come through your skin. You should drink at least 7 to 8 glasses of water per day.

Sleeping well is amongst the supplemental home remedies for acne. This means that you need sleep amongst other things to keep acne at bay. Sleep has an influence on stress and on hormones. Being that both stress and hormones can have an effect on acne, sleep is essential.

A healthy diet that consists of plenty fruits and vegetables provides you with the vitamins and minerals that you need for healthy skin. Acne remedies are all about restoring balance and a good diet can do that for you. Green vegetables in particular keep your skin glowing.

Exercise also has an influence on acne. Again, balance is restored within your body so that it can behave and heal itself the way that it is supposed to.

When cleaning your face, one of the best known acne remedies is to simply use water and then apply a little olive oil. Olive oil acts like a natural antiseptic against bacteria while also retaining necessary moisture.
You can always make a trip to the drug store for over-the-counter products, but keep in mind that your face can become uncomfortably dry and irritated. There are risks. You can also look for natural products that have fewer or no synthetic ingredients that can lead to irritation.

These simple methods will work for you, but they are more than just remedies, but lifestyle changes that you must make. By changing your lifestyle, you are not only helping in ridding yourself or acne, but you are making lifestyle changes that will benefit your overall health.

So before running straight for the over-the-counter acne remedies that contain harsh chemicals and the possibility of harsh side effects, try the above natural acne cures to see what kind of difference you can make. This beats using the creams, acne pads, and face washes because your skin could become overly dry and irritated, leading to extreme discomfort and even more embarrassment. Not only would you have to worry about your acne, but about obvious irritation and dryness as well. So try home remedies for acne and see the improvement, but know that not even the most expensive professional treatments work overnight or even within a few days.

Makeup Tips and Tricks For Cystic Acne Sufferers

Eyes-Fresh-Face-Makeup
Unfortunately, acne is hereditary in my family. What’s worse is that cystic acne is the primary acne my family members struggle with. So from the age of about 13, I also struggled with the pain and embarrassment of cystic acne. Often I would only have one or two problem spots or blemishes, but as you probably know, cystic acne is deeply painful and can be very noticeable.

I am lucky to be artistic and interested in all things artistic like makeup. So as I approached my teen years I experimented with makeup more and more. I learned ways to conceal my acne. I was so good with cystic acne concealing, that if you ask my friends, they probably wouldn’t even remember that I suffered from acne at all. I feel blessed that I learned the proper way to conceal my acne. I saved myself so much embarrassment, once I learned the keys to proper acne concealing.
I do remember a few days, before I learned the best tricks, that I stayed home from school because I was so humiliated with my blemish. I don’t want anyone to have that experience. I sincerely know what it feels like to be embarrassed of your skin. You avoid eye contact at all costs, you avoid basketball games and school dances, because your face is just “out of control”.

I want to share with you a few of my time-tested tricks.
The first trick, is not a trick at all. And you’ve probably heard it before: Don’t pick. I’ll be candid – most acne sufferers tend to pick their acne. It’s gross and difficult to talk about but I want to point it out. Once I stopped touching, prodding and squeezing at my skin, my blemishes cleared up incredibly fast. Especially with cystic acne, picking a cyst does not help. The only way for a cyst to go away is for the swelling to go down. So the better fix would be:

Take an ibuprofen. This one really works. Ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling all over the body and really truly will make a difference with an acne cyst.
Place a hot wash cloth or heat pack on the cyst. In the same way ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling, heat really helps a cyst to calm.

Get a Zeno. The Zeno Acne clearing device is a targeted heat device that is medically safe and effective especially for cystic acne. I know it’s expensive. I really do, but I absolutely recommend it. It’s going to save you scarring and embarrassment. It makes your acne cyst disappear in half the time any other method would. I would not recommend this if it did not work. I’ve been duped into so many quick fix acne treatments because I was vulnerable and wanted help. This is something I truly stand behind – I personally own one. I’ve also heard from so many young women I work with as a makeup artist that it works.
Now here’s the top makeup products for concealing acne cysts.

Stick Concealer, the concealer that looks like a lipstick. It has the perfect consistency because it’s a little thicker than most concealers. It will last longer which is key for cystic acne sufferers. The concealer needs to really bind to the inflamed skin, otherwise it will slide off and you will be red and noticeable. CoverGirl and Almay have good brands of lipstick-shaped concealer. Try those.

Powder foundation – not translucent or mineral makeup. Powder foundation like Lancome’s Dual Finish powder or Clinique’s Double Face matte makeup are great. The reason a powder foundation is necessary is to seal in the concealer on top of your acne spot. Put the concealer on and then pat powder foundation over the top with a sponge. I don’t recommend using a brush to apply the powder. The patting motion will help bind the texture of the concealer to the powder. This means your makeup will stay put and you know you will be concealed for the whole day. Knowing that your face is smooth and your acne is invisible is such a confidence boost! The best powder foundation, in my opinion is Nars Powder Foundation. Nars wins many of the annual Allure awards and is one of my personal favorite brands.

A simple combo of thick concealer stick and powder foundation will really save you from a red, swollen acne cyst. Make sure you get a concealer brush. I am not one of those people who thinks you have to have a makeup brush. But when you’re working with acne, you want to be as hygienic as possible. Instead of using your bacteria-laden fingers, use a clean makeup brush. Your acne will heal much faster if you don’t flare it with dirt, oil and bacteria. My favorite is the Afterglow Vegan Concealer brush. But I’m honestly not here to push products or make you buy expensive makeup. You can very easily buy a concealer brush from Target, from Sonia Kashuk.

I hope that this is helpful. Trust me, I know what you’re going through, and I hope that you understand that you don’t have to live in embarrassment. Little tricks and learning to take care of your skin can go a long way to managing your acne.

Simple Steps to Prevent Acne – Home Made Remedies for your Skin

Do you want to know the simple steps to prevent acne? Acne is one of the most common skin problems. It is just a condition of the skin where the oil glands of the skin are involved. It shows up in different kind of bumps such as blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and pimples. Acne can affect people of all ages but is seen to be quite common in teenagers due to their hormonal changes. We mentioned few important ways to get rid of your acne. Just make sure you note them down somewhere and start implementing. So here we go,

Simple Steps to Prevent Acne

Before moving on to simple steps to prevent acne, here is why and how acne is caused? Skin has hair follicles which contain sebaceous glands or oil glands which in turn contains sebum. Sebum is an oil used to lubricate your skin and hair. When the sebaceous glands produces excess amount of sebum, the pores get clogged and traps the bacteria. This excessive amount of sebum will break down the cellular walls in your pores and cause the bacteria to grow. Also acne could be genetic. Medications which contain androgen and lithium may also cause acne. Sometimes eating chocolate too can cause acne. Most of us assume that acne can be a result of too much of stress. Stress doesn’t cause acne but it can worsen the existing acne as rise in stress levels increases the sebum production.

How to treat your skin when you have acne?
Acne is just a skin condition and if taken care properly in its early stages, can be prevented from making it worse. The following simple steps can be a definitive measure for prevention of acne.

1) Wash your hands regularly and keep it clean
Your hands contain lots of germs and dirt and when you touch your face with your hands then it can make your acne worse. When you touch your face with your hands then the germs on it might flow inside the pores and might clog them. Hence it is always recommended to keep your hands clean before touching you face. Simple Steps to Prevent Acne

2) Never try to burst or squeeze the pimple
Keeping your hands clean is just not enough as your hands can do many more things to make the acne worse like squeezing and scratching the acne.

This might create more inflammation and damages your skin. It delays the healing process. Simple Steps to Prevent Acne

3) Always use make-up which doesn’t contain oil and which doesn’t clog the pores
When you wear a make-up which contains oil, it clogs your pores and causes acne. Don’t go to sleep with makeup. Cleanse your skin thoroughly to
remove the make-up. Always use makeup that is non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic. Usually mineral makeup works well with acne.

4) Wash your hair and keep it away from your face
Hair collects sebum and skin residue. If you do not wash your hair properly then it might result in scalp acne which can be annoying and painful. Hence it is recommended to keep the scalp clean and nourished. Dandruff is one of the main reason due to which you might suffer from scalp acne and when the dandruff falls on your face then your forehead might get mild acne.

The ideal remedy to treat scalp acne is to use a shampoo which contains benzoyl peroxide solution.

Simple Steps to Prevent Acne

5) Avoid too much exposure to the sun
Sunburn is skin damage. Sun exposure can cause irritation which makes your acne worse. A burn or tan makes your skin shed more cells which clogs the pores.

6) Wash your face twice a day
Wash your face two times a day. Once when you wake up in the morning and then, right before you go to bed at night. Over-washing can make your oil glands to produce more sebum and thus increases the acne.

7) Always use mild soap and warm water to wash your face
Whenever you wash your face use a mild soap or a soap which is specially designed for acne. Be extremely gentle when you wash your face.

8) Avoid wearing tight garments
It is always preferred to wear loose clothes when your acne is on your shoulders, back or chest. Your skin needs to breathe. Tight garments like caps, headbands etc. must be avoided. Make sure to wear clean clothes.

9) Do not scrub your face hard
Scrubs are used to manually remove dead skin cells. We always assume that scrubbing helps to cleanse out your pores. In fact, scrubbing hard can increase irritation and redness.

10) Cleanse your face as gently as possible
Cleansing your face twice a day helps to remove dirt, excess oil, and makeup without damaging the skin. Cleansing too often doesn’t help your skin as it makes it drier. Hence cleanse your skin as gently as you can.
If your acne stays for a longer period then it is better to consult a dermatologist who can treat it with prescriptive medicines.

Dark spots are black or even brown colored and appear as a result of excess melanin in that particular area of the skin. Spots and patches on the face can be embarrassing and even lead to low self-esteem. Luckily, there are many possible treatments, such as acid peels and laser surgeries. Simple, natural homemade remedies also may reduce the appearance of spots and other blemishes on your face.
